Description
Speedometer Cable Boot, Improved Design
The speedometer cable boot is sort of an Achilles' heel on the two valve twins that was never upgraded. The rubber deteriorated with time and the fit around the cable becomes loose. Water will potentially enter the transmission and if gone unchecked, transmission bearing failure is a likely outcome, all because of a cheap little rubber boot.
This bothered Siebenrock and keenly aware of the exact nature of the problem, he designed and created a better boot! The Siebenrock Speedo Cable Boot first of all is made of Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR) which is a synthetic rubber that is highly resistant to oil. In addition, the to hole in the boot places a much tighter seal around the speedometer cable than does the original, so the water runs down the outside, away from the cable and it stays out of the transmission.
The highly flexible material combined with the shape and oil resistant properties will make this the last speed cable boot that you will need to buy.

Unfit for the high seas, but perfect for my 77 R100S.

This may be new and improved, but this thing is a bugger to install. After ripping the first one using a circlip tool, I decided I’d try a different method. I used a 1/4 drive socket the same size as the initial collar. Once on the initial collar one still needs to get it over the bolt groove and then over the last collar. I ended up rolling the boot inside out and carefully tugged it up and over the top collar. Then worked it up the cable and got it to turn right side out, working it with fingers only. I hope it’s the last one I’ll need to put on! Definitely a tight fit around the cable.

A tight fit around the cable so take your time working it on with you fingers. I warmed the boot up a bit and it was easier to get on. It’s an improvement over the old version that cracks and isn’t tight around the cable.
